After meeting at the Bridges Conference in London in 2006, mathematicians Bernd Krauskopf and Hinke Osinga came to me with the idea of creating a band of the ‘Lorenz Manifold’ as a sculptural form in metal. This surface is related to the famous ‘Lorenz Attractor’ which is an early example of computational dynamics in the area of Meteorology.
MANIFOLD was hammered from stainless steel sheet in six sections following mathematical data that was imported into Rhino CAD software to visualise a selected band of the manifold. It was the first time I had a computer screen right next to the work area.
Commissioned by Bernd Krauskopf and Hinke Osinga in 2007.
